ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
NGO Name: Help Me Smile in the Face of Cancer - Location: Mexico
In Mexico, childhood cancer is one of the leading causes of death by disease among children between 5 and 14 years of age, with between 5,000 and 6,000 new cases per year and a survival rate of 56%, well below 80% in developed countries (Gob.mx, 2023). In addition to the physical impact, patients face fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. Studies show that art therapy helps to improve emotional well-being, facilitates the expression of emotions, and strengthens resilience during treatment.
The Painting the World with the Color of Love project aims to offer art therapy workshops and cultural experiences that inspire creativity, self-expression, and emotional and mental containment. Through these sessions, which integrate art into the cancer journey, participants can explore their emotions, process grief, and strengthen communication and interpersonal relationships in a supportive environment, helping them to process their experiences with resilience and hope despite the challenges they face. Each year, an exhibit showcases the artwork created by participants, celebrating their personal growth, encouraging positive habits, and recognizing their unique talents. This event serves as a testament to their strength and the transformative power of art.
I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2019. I was 11 years old and had the opportunity to join the regional swimming team, but the disease took away my dream. I became very depressed, it was what I was most excited about in life, I no longer wanted to know anything, and much less look for something that would make me feel good. One day, ASAC came to the hospital and asked me if I wanted to participate in a craft activity, I said no, they respected my decision and left me in my bed a notebook with white sheets and some colors, when they left I started to use them and the following week I showed them to Lis (an ASAC volunteer), She told me that I had a lot of talent and that she would like to give me more material so I could explore more techniques with the “magic wands” as she calls the brushes and colors, I said yes and she took me a professional drawing set with watercolor colors, watercolor paste, brushes, a watercolor pad and markers. From there, I discovered the passion that today gives me the opportunity to express who I am, what I am capable of, and all my dreams. I participate in workshops, and I already have my style. A few months ago, my cancer came back. I don't know what will happen, but I know that I will leave a legacy in my art. I am grateful and motivated to continue.
