ROOTS INSTITUTE CENTER: NURTURING CREATIVITY TO EMPOWER SLUM CHILDREN FOR A BRIGHTER TOMORROW

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
NGO Name: Roots Institute Center - Location: Kenya

THE CHALLENGE

Mathare slum, located in East Nairobi, is characterized by widespread poverty, with a significant portion of the population living below the 2 euros/day poverty line. Local schools face resource constraints, exacerbating community well-being challenges.
In the context of the Mathare slum, where access to formal education is already a challenge, the absence of opportunities for creative activities further worsens the hardships faced by local children.

Additionally, many residents from underserved communities face financial challenges and limited access to resources. They lack the knowledge and skills required to manage their finances effectively, make informed financial decisions, and plan for their economic well-being. This lack of financial literacy often leads to financial instability, debt, and limited opportunities for economic advancement.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The initiative aims to empower underserved primary school children in Mathare slum by providing access to art, dance, music, and creative writing activities, fostering their creativity and personal growth while promoting inclusivity and community engagement. The project also extends to empower high school students by initiating them into entrepreneurship through business acumen and financial literacy development. Through these diverse activities, the project seeks to inspire self-expression, critical thinking, and holistic development in a safe and supportive environment.
These efforts contribute to a brighter future for the young participants, equipping them with the skills and confidence to pursue their dreams and positively impact their community.
